Managing your Righteous Fury

in Guide, Warrior Priest

The best way to generate Righteous Fury is in melee. Not only does each attack reward you with instant Righteous Fury to heal your allies, you also smash your hammer in their face while doing it. The best healing is the one done with a big hammer.

But there are times when a proud Warrior Priest must face the bitter fact that there just aren’t any more enemies in range, but still allies to heal. It could be on top of a Keep wall, or below it. When you are running away from enemies, or chasing them.

Smite is the bread and butter Righteous Fury generator when it comes to melee fighting and mobility. A few quick facts about Smite:

  • Smite cost 45 AP and builds 45 RF no matter if it hits anyone or not.
  • It builds another 15 RF for each enemy hit (2 enemies’ means 45+15+15 = 75).
  • It does not require a target; it can be cast into thin air.
  • It can be cast when running, despite the cast time.

A more effective way of generating Righteous Fury is Supplication. Supplication turns 30 AP into 30 RF per second for 5 seconds or until you run out of AP. So 150 RF for channeling the spell for 5 seconds.

Supplication is excellent when you hang back out of harm’s way or when you just need to refill your RF between battles. Keep in mind that it can be interrupted so try judging the chances of enemies hitting you; often a Smite is better if you are in the thick of battle.

To get the same effectiveness (150 RF) with Smite as with Supplication you need to do two Smite that together hit another 5 enemies (the RF gain seems to be capped at a certain number of enemies so I don’t think you can gain RF for 9 enemies with one). In most battles that is quite easy. First one Smite that hit 3 enemies, smash some face during the 5 second cooldown and then another Smite that hit 2, and you got the same amount of RF as you would get with Supplication, but without interrupting your fighting.

There are also situations where you can’t or don’t have time for Supplication.

You are doing a tactical withdrawal (retreat is not in my dictionary) together with allies and Destruction are on your heels? Smite while running and throw Healing Hand around you.

You entire group are taking damage by standing in an AoE, and 5 seconds for Supplication is enough to kill them? Cast Touch of the Divine, Smite, TotD, TotD, Smite, and repeat. You will eventually run out of RF, but hopefully you can keep your allies alive until the worst is over.

The Hero mob that you are fighting suddenly turns away from the tank and start to hammer you? You use Repent but he is still on you, and you are all out of RF for heals. You can’t use Supplication since it would get interrupted and you also can’t use Smite since that would remove the Repent.

Turn your back on the Hero and cast Smite into thin air. Remember to untarget him as well or your character will turn around and cast it on the mob because of auto-facing. Usually gives you enough heals to survive the time it takes for the tank to pick up the Hero again.

  1. there are so many situations when theres no time for supplication. nice tips though. keep it up

  2. Nice write up, but it begs the question why do WP’s get it so easy when generating RF over doks? No one uses essence lash for the damage and no one would probably use smite if not for the RF generation. Does making it instant cast and giving smite a 1 second cast really make essance lash and smite on par with each other?
